ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast Cyclist Michael Rice studying a Bachelor of Environmental Management at USC Sunshine Coast

IMG-20200216-WA0005G’day,

My name is Michael Rice, I have just moved to the Sunshine Coast from Canberra to begin my studies at USC Sunshine Coast. It has taken me a few years to get to university as I turned 24 this year, but I was able to enjoy a few years doing what I love, which is racing around the world as a cyclist. I first started racing bikes during high school and really enjoyed the freedom and independence you get with the sport. I was lucky to spend a few years competing professionally overseas, mainly in Europe and North America.

Looking back, I think I was ready for a change in 2020 and saw a great opportunity to join the ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast cycling team – a team with a unique ethos towards cycling and education. With the team based out of USC I am really excited to begin my studies here in a Bachelor of Environmental Management and utilise the world class sport facilities on campus at the HPSA.

Being an elite athlete has its challenges and involves a lot of self-discipline and sacrifice. Usually in a sport like cycling, a lot of the competitions involve interstate/ international travel, which means time away from home and uni is making the resources offered by the HPSA very valuable to a student athlete.

IMG-20200216-WA0004I am very excited for the year ahead here at USC and thankful for the support offered from both the ARA Pro Racing Sunshine Coast cycling team and HPSA for allowing me to chase my goals as a student athlete.

HPSA wishes Matt Rice and the ARA Pro Racing team the best of luck in 2020!
